The Boeing 747

In Winter of 2023, we took a Lufthansa Flight from Frankfurt to SFO on a Boeing 747. Our original flight had been cancelled, so we had two choices to get back home. Roy wanted to fly a 747 before they took them out of service, so we did. The plane was a literal museum piece.

You can find details about the trip home here.

The Boeing 747 is often called the “Queen of the Skies”. It was added into service on January 22, 1970. The aircraft revolutionized global commercial aviation by introducing the wide-body “jumbo jet” concept. This cut seat costs by 30% making international travel affordable.

There are only 4 commercial operators of the 747 today:

  • Lufthansa
  • Air China
  • Korean Air
  • Rossiya Airlines

Ladies and gentleman, this is your Captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress. –Captain Eric Moody (British Airways Flight 009, 1982)
